Interesting facts about the filling of the futon mattress
While in Japan the futon is traditionally filled with cotton, western futons are improved by using additional
materials like natural mattress and offer improved supporting during the sleep. The most common materials next to
cotton are:
- Latex: provides elasticity and pleasant softness
- Coconut fibers : provide improved airing of the futon and are also responsible for necessary firmness of
the mattress
- Horsehair:ensures durable elasticity and breathing activity
- Sheep’s wool, relativelySheep’s natural wool:in outside area provides pleasant surface and in
addition has great warmth insulating properties
- Hemp: causes high breathing activity
Configure futons by yourself by Futon24
You can buy futons that consist only of one of these materials or you can also combine different fillings. The other
differentiating feature is the number of combined layers. If you chose e.g. A standard futon mattress with the
height of about 12 cm, the filling will consist mostly of multi-layered cotton. The cotton is the basis for standard
futon mattresses and offers,next to the breathing activity a special resistance against moths. If you chose the
coconut futon mattress, then inside you will find a combination of cotton and heat-regulating coconut. Here
warmth-insulating effect is advantageous. Moreover the great amount of air between the coconut fibers and makes the
futon mattress moisture-resistant.
If you want a particularly high-quality futon mattress, then we offer a
product made of three cotton layers, between them one latex layer and then again three cotton layers of all
requirements. With the height of 14 cm that in the normal state becomes smaller, this product is dimensionally
stable and offers extremely high point-elasticity. Next to those futon mattresses you can also chose between hemp
and sheep's wool futons.
