Can you use any mattress as a floor mattress?
Basically, you can use any mattress as a floor mattress, that is, use it lying on the floor as a sleeping surface. However, it should be noted that this use on the floor is not equally suitable for all mattresses.
If you want to use a mattress permanently as a floor mattress, you should make sure that it has the best possible point elastic properties, i.e. that it cushions heavy body parts well at certain points. When using a bed frame with a slatted frame, the latter significantly supports the relief of parts of the mattress that are particularly stressed by body pressure, which is, so to speak, completely omitted when using it as a floor mattress without an underlying slatted frame.
Another point that must be considered is the breathability of a mattress. Depending on the materials used for the filling of a mattress, it can not only become clammy when used as a floor mattress due to poorer ventilation, but in the worst case even start to mold. Mattresses made of materials that are not intended for use as floor mattresses should or would have to be set up regularly for such use in order to air them thoroughly. This usually makes the use of these types of mattresses not very useful for use as a floor mattress because of the comparatively extensive maintenance required. Filling materials suitable for floor mattresses are mainly PU foam or cold foam. Latex mattresses or those with Visco foam are particularly poorly suited for use as a floor mattress due to their poor ventilation properties in contrast.
Traditional floor mattresses with quilting: futons and shiatsu mats
.
In Japan, sleeping on the floor is a tradition. A cotton futon rolled out on a tatami mat (rice straw mat) often serves as a bed there. By rolling up and unrolling the futon after or before use, the problem of lack of ventilation is not a problem with classic futons. For those who prefer a rather hard sleeping surface, a Deshi futon or the original Japan futon made of 100% cotton (120 cm x 200cm) from our range, together with a tatami mat as a base, may be just the thing for you.
Another form of futon that is also multifunctional and suitable for use as a floor mattress are our Shiatsu Futon floor mats. These can be used as a futon to sleep on, as a meditation mat, for lying or playing, or even as a massage mat, e.g. for Shiatsu massages. Our Shiatsu Futons are relatively thin futons, which are designed to be rolled out and rolled up like traditional futons. For sleeping they are suitable especially when used together with an underlying tatami mat or a travel mat. As a floor mat for other uses, they have the great advantage that they can be quickly set up and then stowed away again to save space.
Travel and guest futons - versatile floor mattresses for camping, outdoor or as a space-saving guest bed alternative
.
Our travel and guest futons are decidedly designed as floor mattresses and can be used just like that on the floor or together with a travel pad or tatami mat. All travel and guest futons can also be used either folded as seating furniture (guest futon) or rolled up with an included bag (travel futons) to save space when not in use. Our travel futons can also be folded or laid out as a cozy seating pad in addition to being used as a floor mattress. Whether for guests, camping or other outdoor activities, our guest and travel futons offer space-saving and practical seating or sleeping pads.
Floor Sleepers and the Paleo Lifestyle
.
There are probably almost as many sleep types as there are people. Some like it hard, others soft, some lie on their stomach, others on their back or side. In the same way, some people prefer high or low beds or prefer to sleep on the floor. The myth that sleeping on the floor is bad for the back can now be safely relegated to the realm of half-truths. Followers of the so-called Paleo lifestyle, who believe that an approximation to the habits of our early Stone Age ancestors has health benefits, even propagate sleeping on the floor as particularly healthy. However, this is just as little proven as the eating habits propagated by followers of this movement. What is certain, however, is that people who prefer a rather harder surface for sleeping often also find sleeping on the floor comfortable.
